Sauna, Steam Room and Infrared: What Each One Actually Does
Three hot rooms, three completely different physical situations, and one piece of counterintuitive advice that is worth the whole article: the coolest of the three is the one you should stay in for the shortest time.
Traditional Finnish sauna
Hot dry air, typically 160 to 195 F, at low humidity, heated by rocks you can throw water on. Throwing water raises the humidity briefly, which makes the room feel dramatically hotter without changing the temperature much - the reason a "löyly" hits so hard is that it interferes with your ability to evaporate sweat.
Rounds are short: 8 to 15 minutes is normal, and beginners should be at the bottom of that or below. The temperature difference between the top and bottom bench is much larger than people expect, often 30 degrees or more, so the lower bench is a real option rather than a consolation prize.
The Finnish sauna is the version with the most research behind it, largely because Finland has large long-running population cohorts and near-universal sauna use. The observational literature associates frequent sauna bathing with better cardiovascular outcomes. It is worth being precise about what that means: these are observational associations in a population where sauna use is normal, not evidence that sauna treats anything.
Steam room
Much cooler - typically 110 to 120 F - and completely saturated with water vapour. This is the counterintuitive one. The air temperature is 60 or 70 degrees lower than a Finnish sauna, and you should generally stay in for a shorter time, not longer.
The reason is evaporative cooling. Your primary defense against heat is sweating and letting that sweat evaporate. At 100 percent humidity, nothing evaporates. Sweat runs off you without cooling you at all, so your core temperature climbs steadily with no brake on it, and it climbs without the strong subjective signal that a very hot dry room gives you.
Ten minutes is plenty. Twenty is more than most people should do.
Steam rooms also have a hygiene dimension that dry saunas mostly do not. Warm wet surfaces are hospitable to bacteria, and the US Centers for Disease Control publishes guidance on Legionella, which grows in warm water systems. A well-run facility disinfects properly and this is a non-issue. Sit on a towel, do not put your face near a steam jet, and if a steam room smells of anything other than clean, leave.
Infrared cabin
The odd one out. An infrared cabin does not primarily heat the air - it emits infrared radiation absorbed by your skin, so the air might only be 120 to 150 F while you sweat heavily.
That makes it feel considerably milder than a Finnish sauna at the same declared discomfort level, and it makes rounds longer: 20 to 40 minutes is typical. People who find traditional saunas oppressive - the hot air on the face and in the airways is the common complaint - often get on far better with infrared.
Marketing around infrared makes claims that outstrip the evidence. Detox claims in particular have no support: sweat is overwhelmingly water and electrolytes, and the organs that clear things from your body are your liver and kidneys, not your skin. Claims about specific wavelengths targeting specific tissues should be treated with the same skepticism. What an infrared cabin reliably does is get you hot in a way many people find more tolerable, which is enough.
Rough round lengths, conservative on purpose. Finnish sauna 8 to 15 minutes. Steam room 8 to 12 minutes. Infrared 20 to 40 minutes. Halve all of those for your first few visits. Our session planner builds a full circuit from the time you have and how much of this you have actually done.
What they have in common
All three put load on your cardiovascular system: heart rate rises, peripheral blood vessels dilate, blood pressure behaves oddly, and you lose fluid. That load is largely why they feel good and why they may have benefits. It is also why the cautions are real rather than legal boilerplate.
Talk to a clinician first if you are pregnant, have a heart or circulatory condition, take blood pressure medication, have had a recent cardiac event, are prone to fainting, have uncontrolled epilepsy, or have a condition that affects how you sense temperature.
Never combine any of them with alcohol. This is the single most common factor in sauna emergencies, and "sweating it out" is exactly backwards: you are adding heat load and dehydration to impaired judgment and impaired thermoregulation simultaneously.
Get out early rather than late. Dizziness, nausea, headache or tingling in the hands means the round is over. And stand up slowly - blood pressure drops on the way out, and the faint happens at the door, not on the bench.
Which should you use?
Genuinely, whichever you enjoy enough to use regularly. There is no ranking here that survives contact with the fact that consistency beats optimisation for anything in this category.
